Looking at the world in cheerful amazement

Russian inventor and watchmaker Konstantin Chaykin believes that modern collectable mechanical watches should have something else besides chronometric accuracy and high-quality performance. He is convinced that a watch should evoke bright emotions in its owner and be clearly distinguished as an objet d’art, that is, spectacular, noticeable, memorable and provocative. That is why Konstantin Chaykin, creator of the extraordinary “Joker” watch and long-time admirer of the works of the internationally-recognised king of horror, Stephen King, timed the release of the “Clown” watch to coincide with that of the film adaptation of King’s novel “It”.

Spirited, smiling, big-eyed and looking at the world in cheerful amazement, this watch clearly reflects the fact its owner is a connoisseur of an unusual, spectacular style, who is ready to challenge generally accepted tastes while being an authority on haute horlogerie with their own well-developed preferences. Experts share this point of view – in 2018 Konstantin Chaykin and his “Clown” watch were awarded one of the most prestigious awards in the industry, the “Golden Arrow” prize in the “Audacity” category of the Geneva Grand Prix of Fine Watchmaking (Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève).

Сase back

The new version of the watch still remains an elegant, witty work of mechanical art, only now its appearance reminds us that during the formation of its personality, each child faces its own fears and always overcomes them. Just as “It” of the novel re-emerges in the small town of Derry once every 27 years, so the watch was symbolically limited to 27 pieces. Konstantin Chaykin decided that each of those who took ownership of one of the 27 pieces should play the role of a caring adult – part of the amount from the sale of each model inspired by the iconic novel was placed at the disposal of a charitable organisation dedicated to helping sick children.

Especially for the “Joker” and other models of the “Wristmons” collection Konstantin Chaykin developed a double-disc display for the hour and minute indications, as well as a moonphase indicator. In the construction and design of the movement, he was guided by the principles of haute horlogerie, despite the fact that the movement is hidden under an opaque dial. Konstantin Chaykin meticulously finished every part of the movement using classic techniques: perlage pearl textured grinding; fine longitudinal and circular grinding; abrasive blasting to a matte finish; a smooth handcrafted chamfer; engraving; polished screw holes, pins and jewels; spherical polishing of the axel tips; and galvanized rhodium plating. In total the module includes 8 jewels, designed to reduce friction, while the moonphase indicator is driven by a wheel with 59 teeth.

The watchmaker’s vision of the clown, Stephen King’s central character in “It”, is found in every element of the design – from the spectacular, brightly-coloured irises and red details of the face-like dial, to the high-quality black leather strap with contrasting red stitching.
