Football today is more than just a sport, and a mechanical watch is more than just something which tells the time. Russian inventor and watchmaker Konstantin Chaykin combines these two worlds with the cheerful yet occasionally sarcastic smile of the Joker’s moonphase indicator, creating a collector watch inspired by the 2018 football World Cup in Russia.
The Joker Soccer is a real fan. In his constantly rotating discs of hour and minute indicators, one can see reflections of a soccer ball, which has also replaces the moon of the moonphase indicator.
PRODUCTION
There is something special about observing the watch being built. It is not just a mechanical process, but a true art in which the meticulous work of the master craftsman is combined with the precision of technical thinking. Assembling a watch is something that can fascinate, inspire and convey a sense of wonder.
DESIGN
The Joker Soccer watch is produced in a limited edition of 11 pieces, reflecting the number of players in a football team. Around this time Konstantin Chaykin discovered another talent – he realised that he can not only make and design watches and their movements, but he can also invent watchstraps with no less success. His first branded watchstrap had been introduced a short time earlier – in March 2018 – when the Joker watchstrap with a tie (‘Joker tie-strap’) was introduced at BaselWorld 2018. That is why, for the Joker Soccer, Konstantin Chaykin came up with an impressive burgundy-coloured watchstrap of high-quality leather with football-inspired stitching.
MOVEMENT
Especially for the Joker and other models of the Wristmons collection Konstantin Chaykin developed a double-disc display for the hour and minute indications, as well as a moonphase indicator. In the construction and design of the movement, he was guided by the principles of haute horlogerie, despite the fact that the movement is hidden under an opaque dial. Konstantin Chaykin meticulously finished every part of the movement using classic techniques: perlage; fine longitudinal and circular grinding; sandblasting; hand-polished chamfers; engraving; polished screw, pin and jewel recesses; ball polishing of the pivots; and rhodium plating. In total the module includes 8 jewels, designed to reduce friction, while the moonphase indicator is driven by a wheel with 59 teeth.
