A Renaissance sense of time
In the “Genius Temporis” watch Konstantin Chaykin concerns himself with philosophical themes, along with themes of the essence and connection of time. In the 16th Century mechanical progress resulted in the possibility of making timepieces very compact and – thanks to the invention of the winding spring – timepieces that could operate in any orientation in relation to the vertical.
Therefore, they evolved from items for general use to those for personal use, and people entered the world of a uniform calculation of time. In some ways, those times are comparable to the modern era, when telephone communication, once a necessity, evolved into an unbreakable personal connection to the world of global information spaces.
MOVEMENT
The calibre K.01-5 of the “Genius Temporis” watch was developed by Konstantin Chaykin and is equipped with a mechanical device to switch the single hand between the hour and minute indications upon the pressing of a button, a device also invented by Konstantin Chaykin. The movement was made entirely at the Konstantin Chaykin manufactory and is made according to the standards of haute horlogerie. Components finished using classical techniques: abrasive blasting;perlage; fine longitudinal, radial and circular grindings; flat polishing; manual chamfering, polishing; polished screw holes, pins and jewels; spherical polishing of the axel tips; and galvanized plating of rhodium and gilding.

CASE
In the “Genius Temporis” watch Konstantin Chaykin combines the Renaissance aesthetic of the early personal timepieces of the 16th Century with the modern complicated, sophisticated movements of the switchable indication of time he invented. Decorated in the emphatically strict manner of the early Renaissance, the dial is dominated by a single hand in blued steel. The hand shows the hours or the minutes as the owner desires. As such, there are two time indication scales on the dial – an external scale for the hour indication and an internal scale for the minute indication. Switching between the two scales is possible upon the pressing of a button, whereby the hand jumps from the hour marker to show the appropriate position on the minute scale. Upon releasing the button the hand returns to the hour display.
